CAS Channel -- Recent
research reveals, whales dwarf (pygmy right whale), the mysterious and
elusive creatures that rarely appear on the beach, is the last surviving
relatives of the whales have long believed extinct.
The
findings were published on Tuesday in the "Proceedings of the Royal
Society B" that may help explain why marine mammals that mysterious look
so different from other whales present.
"Pygmy
whales are still alive almost like living fossils," said Felix Marx, a
paleontologist at the University of Otago in New Zealand. "The pope is a pope last survivors of an ancient lineage of species, which until now did not realize was still alive."
Living fossilsRelatively dwarf whale had only 6.5 meters long body and live in the open ocean. Marine mammals that inhabit the still elusive southern hemisphere and only visible in the sea a few dozen times. As a result, scientists know almost nothing about the habits and social structure species.
Strange
creatures that have a snout shaped like a bow like he was pouting,
which makes it look different from other living whales. DNA
analysis explains, dwarf whale baleen whales evolved in modern times
such as blue whales and humpback whales, between 17 million and 25
million years ago. However, snout pygmy whales indicate that they relate more closely with other whales family that includes whales head bow. However, no study of fossils that show how whales evolved dwarf, said Marx.
To
understand how the pygmy whale into the papal lineage, Marx and other
researchers carefully analyzed the fragments of the skull and other
fossils of whales dwarf, and some other ancient cetacean order.
The
researchers explained that the skull is most similar to the pygmy whale
whale family anciently called cetotheres were thought to have become
extinct about 2 million years ago. Cetotheres appeared about 15 million years ago and have lived in the oceans around the world.
The
findings help explain how whales evolved dwarf and may also help to
explain how ancient whales "that are now extinct" is alive. This
new information is the first step in reconstructing the ancient papal
lineage in order to re-matched to the point when all the members of this
group of animals was first changed, he said.
